DAMAGE TO BRIDGE
From Our Oxvn Correspondent
WHANGAREI, Friday
An alarming rumour was in circulation on Christmas Eve that the Mangakaliia Bridge, the largest wooden span structure in New Zealand, had collapsed. Investigation, however, proved this to be much exaggerated, though a slight break caused some delay and inconvenience to the travelling public.
It appears that the combined weight of a motor-lorry and oil-engine towing a crusher was too much for a number of weak planks, which gave way. They were jacked on to temporary planks to avoid further trouble. The bridge was impassable for some two hours or more, and cars had to travel via Hotou and Wheki Valley, a further 10 miles.
