YACHTS AND OUTBOARDS RACE KEENLY HUM BUG WINS AGAIN Special to THE SIX RUSSELL, Today. Between two and three thousand j people watched the annual Russell ! regatta, which was held here yester- ■ day in favourable weather. The outboard championships created great interest, and despite the choppy water creditable speeds were attained. . The surface was too disturbed for Ocean Mule, tlie crack Auckland j speeder, to put up its best performI ance. Nevertheless, with a smaller motor the craft won the B class championship. j The race for the inter-provincial shield, which is also the open championship of New Zealand, was won by Mr. L. Stericker, in his “Blimp” type boat Hum Bug IV. Early in the day a heavy fog delayed the arrival of the steamer Clansman from Auckland by two hours, but at 9.30 a.m. the weather cleared and a light nor’-easterly breeze came down and later gained in strength. The Clansman was the flagship and the schooner-yacht Valkyrie, which recently arrived back from Suva, was official starting boat for sailing and launch races, and the launch Linda for the outboards. Details of the racing are: YACHTS AND LAUNCHES Keel Yachts.—Windward was first away, followed by lorangi. Ida, Mahaki and Janet. lorangi rounded Brampton buoy first with Windward next, and on the run to Tore Tore mark lorangi increased her lead. Times at the end of the first round -were:—lorangi, 12.7.4; Windward, 12.14.42; Mahaki, 12.17.28; Janet, 12.22.24. The order was kept in the second round, and the finish was timed as followslorangi, 12.59.13; Windward, 1.3 7.14; Mahaki, 1.12.9; Janet, 1.32.47. Result:—lorangi, 1; Windward, 2; Mahaki, 3. Mullet Boats.—Six mullet boats started in this order at 11.30:—Omatere, Starloeli, Rakoa, Celox, Rahiri and Starlight. Starloch was first round Brampton buoy, then came Celox, Starlight, Omatere, Rakoa and Rahiri. Starlight passed Celox on the run to the next mark and the times on the completion of the first round were:—Starloeli, 12.32.3: Starlight, 12.33.7; Celox, 12.34.36; Omatere, 12.35.1; Rakoa, 12.38.4; Rahiri, 3 2.39.53. Just after rounding the mark-boat Celox carried away her peak halliard and retired. Starloch continued in the lead, followed by Starlight, and the finish was timed:—Starloch, 1.37.16; Starlight, 1.40.36; Omatere, 1.44.32; Rakoa, 1.47.36; Rahiri, 1.56.26. Result:—Starloeli, 1; Starlight, 2; Rakoa The race for local launches resulted In a win for Fisherman’s Luck, -which beat Omaki by 3 6sec. The times were:—Fisherman's Luck, 1.53.16; Omaki, 1.53.29. Alma G. Doris and Korora started In the race for local hire launches. Alma O. led all the way and the finish was timed:—Alma G., 2.29.38; Doris, 2.37.7; Korora, 2.41.14. Result: Korora, 1; Doris * Only Alma G. and Fisherman’s Luck started in the race for all-comers. Alma G. led all the way, and the finish was timed: —Alma G., 3.55.46, 1; Fisherman’s Luck, 3.46.16, 2. In the outboard championship event Humbug IV., Seahorse, Ocean Mule and Marquette IT. started. Sea Horse led away from the start, but at the end of the first round Marquette 11. was in the lead, with Humbug, Sea Horse and Ocean Mule in that order. Humbug took the lead in the second lap. Marquette was the fastest on the straight, but Humbug was superior on the turns. This order was retained for the remainder of the race. The actual times were:—Humbug TV., 7m 565; Marquette 11., 8m 9s; Sea Horse, 8m 595; Ocean Mule, 9m 15s. The result:—Humbug, 1; Marquette, 2; Sea Horse, 3. The B class championship brought out Miss Akarana, British Maid and Ocean Mule. Miss Akarana led on the first lap. British Maid then took tlie lead but was passed by Ocean Mule. The latter stopped and was passed by British Maid. In the third lap Ocean Mule again overhauled British Maid and led for the remainder of the course. The actual times were:—Ocean Mule, 12m 4s; British Maid, 15m 445. Results: Ocean Mule, 1; British Maid, 2.
The competitors In the race for the Challenge Shield were: Ocean Mule (Auckland), Humbug (Russell), Miss Marquette (Wanganui), Sea Horse (Mangonui). Humbug took the lead, followed by Marquette, Sea Horse and Ocean Mule. Marquette passed Humbug on the straight, but in the second turn the latter again passed Marquette and led to the finish. Marquette was second, with Sea Horse third and Ocean Mule fourth. The actual times were:—Humbug, 7m Bs, 1; Marquette, 7m 265, 2; Sea Horse, 8m Bs, 3; Ocean Mule, 8m 475, 4.
In the B and C class handicap event Blue Streak, Miss Akarana, Ocean Mule and British Maid started. From a good start Blue Streak led, with Ocean Mule, Miss Akarana and British Maid in that order. Blue Streak continued her lead throughout, with Miss Akarana second until the fourth lap, where the lastnamed struck trouble and retired. The actual times were:—Blue Streak, 8m 375; Ocean Mule, 30m 21s; British Maid, 30m 46. Result on corrected times:—Blue Streak, 1; Ocean Mule, 2; British Maid, The B class handicap race for outboard motors brought out Ocean Mule and British Maid. The latter led from the start and won easily. The corrected times were:—British Maid, 12m 335; Ocean Mule, 15m 16s. An event for allcomers at the close of the day produced Humbug, Sea Horse, Miss Marquette, Blue Streak and Ocean Mule. Sea Horse led for the first two laps, with Miss Marquette and Humbug close behind.
In the third lap Humbug took the lead, with Sea Horse following. Miss Marquette slowed lap one the turn and was passed by Blue Streak. The finishing times were:—Humbug, 7m 395; Sea Horse, 8m 10s; Blue Streak, 9m 465; Miss Marquette, 9m 50s. Corrected times were:—Sea Horse, 1: Humbug, 2; Blue Streak, 3. Ocean Mule retired after the first lap.
