DISLIKES ROTO ROA
man who escaped TWICE gaol for false pretences From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Friday. When David Hebley was released from Mount Eden Gaol a few days ago he came to Hamilton intending to have some fun. He did. However, his ideas of legal fun and those of the police did not coincide. After putting up at a private hotel at Franhton Hebley indulged in an orgy of drinking and then committed an offence which had got him into trouble previously. At 'the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court this afternoon Hebley pleaded guilty to a f harge of issuing a valueless cheque for £8 10s and attempting to defraud Nellie Wardrop.
Detective-Sergeant J. Thompson read accused's statement in which the latter said he had acrived from Auckland a few days ago and admitted tilling in a blank cheque and attempting to pay his boat’d with it. He threw the cheque away when the police arrived. The deteative-sergeant added that accused had been drinking heavily and had reached the “D.T.” stage when arrested. Accused pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. Detective-Srrgeant Thompson said accused had a list dating back to 1915 and had only recently been discharged from Mount Eden. Hebley said that he committed the offence under the influence of liquor and was very sorry for it. Tho magistrate said it was useless sending accused to Koto Roa as he had escaped from there twice and had been guilty of insubordination on one occasion. He had been given 12 months for forgery in May, 1925, and six months for false pretences In May, 1929.
A Sentence of six months’ imprisonment was imposed.
