RADIO AMATEURS MEET

RELAY SYSTEM DISCUSSED A relay chain ot amateur radio transmitting stations is to be formed shortly in New Zealand, according to the decision of the first annual conference of the New Zealand Amateur Radio Transmitters' Association this morning. This chain will ensure the passing of messages between transmitters in the various centres. In opening the convention this morning, Mr. H. P. V. Brown, a past president, said he believed that personal contact was necessary between members of the association in order to keep up interest in radio. He considered that annual conferences would do much to help to sustain interest in work on the short-waves.

The need for a relay chain of stations which would come on the air at a certain time each evening ready to send or to receive messages from members in the other centres, was stressed by Mr. S. G. Waite, Dominion secretarv. He mentioned the recent earthquake in the South Island as an occasion on which amateur transmitters, had they been so organised, could have maintained communication. Radio could be used in any national emergency. Sub-chains would need to be organised m each district to pass messages along to their destination.

It was decided that one station in each centre, the official' relay station should be on the air on two nights each week, on days yet to be fixed. In the event of a calamity becoming known, all stations will come on the air immediately. Suggestions for a competition will be discussed bv a committee.
