RABAUL SUFFERS THIRD SERIOUS FIRE IN FIVE YEARS.—The seat of Government of the Mandated Territories of New Guinea, the town of Pabaul, has suffered heavily from fires during the last few years. A recent cable message reported the destruction of the wharf shown in the picture, Together with 3,000 tons of copra. The wharf was partly destroyed about five years ago. A little later the whole of “Chinatown,” comprising the main business section of the town, was burned to the ground. Rabaul itself, which lies at the northern end of the island of New Britain, was built by the Germans and was captured by an Australian expeditionary force in 1914.
