Obituary

MR. W. ADAMS

A pioneer of Pukekohe and Pupi, Mr. William Adams has died at Pukekohe at the age of 75. Born at Luton, England, he was taken to Capetown at the age of five and after five years there he was brought to New Zealand. The family settled at Pukekohe, but later Mr. Adams settled at Puni, where he lived for 30 years. Ho retired to Pukekohe 15 years ago. He was a member of the Pukekohe Mounted Rifle Volunteers for 36 years and held long service medals. He is survived »>y his wife, three sons and three daughters. There are 12 grandchildren.

MR. T. F. MARTIN

New Zealand’s authority on questions relating to borough and county councils, Mr. Thomas Frederick Martin, barrister and solicitor, and a respected resident of Wellington, died there on Christmas morning after an illness of two months. Born in Kent, England, Mr. Martin was educated at Torquay and Heidelberg, Germany, and was admitted as an English solicitor in 1874. Five years later he came to New Zealand and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in the Dominion. In 1884 he was town clerk and city solicitor of "Wellington, but after five years he resigned the clerkship, although continuing as solicitor, and entered private practice. In 1891 Mr. Martin was appointed counsel to the Municipal Association of New Zealand and in 1894 was appointed to the New Zealand Counties’ Association. In 1895 hr prepared the Local Government Bill for the Government. For many years lie was the recognised authority on municipal and local body law and published several books dealing with that subject.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, one son. Mr. T. M. Martin, solicitor, of Wellington, and two daughters, Mrs. C. Clark, of Murchison, and Mrs. E. Anderson, of Day’s Bay.

MRS. S. GALLAGHER

Mrs. S. Gallagher, who died at Herne Bay on Sunday at the age of 81, was born in Auckland in what is now known Courthouse Lane and had spent all ber life in Auckland. Her father was a soldier in the 58th Regiment and arrived in Auckland before! 1844. After buying his discharges he sent for his wife and two children. Mrs. Gallagher was the first of the family to be born in Auckland. She was married twice and is survived by 11 children. There are •'*3 granchildren and 49 great-grand-children.
