TRENTHAM SALES

HAVE MADE HISTORY SERIES OF CLASSIC WINNERS It is only three years ago since Messrs. Wright Stephenson and Co., Ltd., announced their intention to accede to the requests of the leading breeders of the Dominion and establish national sales of thoroughbreds at Trentham. Today, Trentham is unchallenged as the sales centre in the Dominion for thoroughbred stock. It has loose-box accommodation for aver 150 horses. With the additional facilities avail ble, over 200 head have been accommodated there. Everything has been done to bring the equipment right up to date. The breeders, too, have royally supported the venture, which after all it was largely in their interests to do. As a result the sales have achieved a remarkable success. At the second sales a Dominion record was established when the Limond—Homage colt was purchased by Mr. G. D. Greenwood for 2,300 guineas. Last year this record was broken when Mr. Vivian Riddiford paid 2,400 guineas for a Limond— Waterwings colt. A Good One

On the other hand, buyers have found the sales a happy hunting ground. The record priced colt of 1928 is now known as Honour, winner of the New Zealand Derby and valuable two-year-old races in New Zealand and Australia. The same year there came up for sale a colt by Night Raid from Entreaty. Under the name of Phar Lap, this youngster has won, in record time, both the Australian Jockey Club’s and the Victoria Racing Club’s Derbies.

Still another colt in the same cata-

logue has also placed his name on the list of Derby winners of the year. This was the Chief Ruler—Tinkler colt known as Hot Spring, who won easily the South 'Australian Derby, and is to run for the West Australian Derby at the end of the year.

Pink Coat, by Hunting Song from Red Edna, winner of the Harcourt Cup in brilliant style from a high-class field, and Count Palatine (by Paladin from Per Arma), second in the New Zealand Derby, were others who appeared in the same catalogue. Many Winners

Mamy other three-year-old winners might also be referred to as coming under the hammer on the same occasion, such as Hunting Day (Hunting Song—Gay). Duellona (Paladin--War Lady), Refresher (Tea Tray—Hula Girl), Chief Singer (Chief Ruler— Carol Singer), Admiral Drake (Chief Ruler—Tame Duck), Roseglow (Absurd—Rose Queen), Clever (Psychology—Miss Cute), Statuary (Leighton —Statuette), Hunting Boy (Hunting Song—Sheila), First Money (Paper Money—Peronilla). The high standard set is being fully maintained, if not extended, for already this season the following two-year-olds which appeared in last year’s catalogue have been returned as winners of high-class races:—Royal Ruler (Chief Ruler—Baby Doll) has won the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes; Praise (Limond—Eulogy), the C.J..C. Welcome Stakes and Pioneer Handicap; Goldfind (Psychology—Orofino), the Queensland T.C. Hopeful Stakes (£1,000); Princess Betty (Chief Ruler —Marceline), the H.B. J.C.’s Prince of Wales Stakes, C.J.C. Spring Nursery Handicap and second in C.J.C. Welcome Stakes; Gesture (Chief Ruler— Nottava), the Masterton Nursery Handicap, W.R.C. Taita Handicap and Roseneath Handicap; Veilmond (Lim-

ond—Veil), second Australian J.CCanonbury Stakes, winner A.J.C. Two-year-old Stakes; and Chief Link (Chief Ruler—Silver Link), the Musket Stakes, second A.R.C. Welcome Stakes and W.R.C. Roseneath Handicap. Well Related As the catalogue for the 1930 sales contains full or near relatives to all of the important winners named and many other high-class yearlings, including several near relatives to tha Melbourne Cup winner, Nightmarch. and such mighty performers as Agrion. Thespian, Star Stranger, Commendation, Sasanof. Prodice. Rabbi, Paleta, Supremacy. Razzle Dazzle, Rapier, Desert Gold, Oratrix, Flying Juliet, Concentrate (the dual St. Leger winner, who was sold in the first sales), and Laughing Prince (the leading stake winner of the past season, who also came under the hammer at Trentham), there should be a record Attendance at this year’s fixture, to be held at Trentham next month.
