CHRISTMAS IN GAOL
COMFORTS FOR PRISONERS Prisoners in Mount Eden Gaol were not forgotten ©n Christmas Bay. A special Christmas dinner was provided and a packet of cigarettes, provided by the Prisoners’ Aid Society, was given each man. Extra comforts for the women inmates were sent by Major Annie Gordon, of the Salvation Army, and extra comforts were also sent to those confined on Rangitoto Island. A Christmas service for the inmates of Mount Eden Gaol was conducted by the Anglican city missioner, the Rev. Jasper Calder, yesterday morning. A large number attended, and appropriate festival hymns, led by a choir of 18, were sung. A Communion service followed, and at this about the same number remained to partake of the Sacrament. The sermon retold the old prisoner’s message and also included a number of stories suitable to the occasion.
