27,000 TONS OF STEEL IN NEW YORK HOUSE ,

An order for over 27,000 tons of j steel for the New Waldorf-Astoria ’ Hotel in New York was placed with an American steel firm. This is one of the largest orders- for structural steel to be placed in America in recent years exceeding the tonnage used in the Woolworth Building by j 4.759 tons. The steel alone will cost i u. 250,000 dollars. Construction will start next January. The main ballroom of the hotel, ! located on the third floor, will be 44ft high from floor to ceiling, and i over this will be five trusses 90ft j long, carrying the loads above. The | truss over the proscenium arch of the main ballroom will be 35ft high and 90ft long, and will weigh about 205 , tons. It will be the largest and j heaviest truss ever used in the erec- : tion of a building. It will be neces- ! sary to erect this truss at a height of 75ft above the street. The bottom I chord is approximately at the level ! of the sixth floor and the top chord i at the level of the ninth floor. The New Waldorf will be 46 storeys j in height, and the steel will rise to IjLlie topmost pinnacles of the tower, 600 ft above the sidewalk level.
