“WHOOPEE”
HIS MAJESTY’S THIS EVENING At His Majesty’s Theatre this afternoon, J. C. Williamson, Ltd., presented their musical comedy company, numbering over 100 people, in the initial representation here of the stupendous spectacular musical play, “Whoopee,” which has just terminated a record season of six months in Melbourne. A full scenic and lighting rehearsal was held on Tuesday evening under the direction of the producer, Mr. Victor Tatnall, so that everything was in complete readiness for this performance. “Whoopee” is full of pretty melodies, delightful musical numbers, genuinely humorous situations, interesting romances, witty dialogue, beautiful ensembles, clever ballets and gorgeous frocking, and the dancing is one of its best features. A long list of principals includes the popular and talented young soprano and comedienne, Miss Lilian Crisp; Mr. William Perryman, the brilliant young tenor, whose work with Gladys Moncrieff in “The Lady of the Road” and “The Maid of the Mountains” greatly assisted the success of these operas; Mr. John Ralston, whose characterisations in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas and his brilliant portrayal in “Lilac Time” are well known to local playgoers. Mr. Don Nicol, said to be the funniest comedian who has yet appeared under the J. C. W'illiamson, Ltd., management, and Mr. Terry Kendall and Miss Pat Kendall, two famous London artists and dancers. The Kendalls will introduce their dancing specialties for which they* are world-famous. Another feature of
“Whobpee” is the perfect work of the chorus and the ballet. “Whoopee” should prove an ideal holiday attraction, and it is said that it makes a special appeal to children. The production is staged under the direction of Mr. Victor Tatnall, and a full operatic orchestra is under the baton of Mr. Harry Burton. Only a limited number of performances can be staged of “Whoopee,” and during the season “Lilac Time,” “The Student Prince,” and “The Maid of the Mountains” will be revived.
