ARIKI WINS OCEAN RACE

RAKOA TAKES PRIZE FOR MULLET BOATS Shortly after seven o’clock this morning the first placed yacht, Ariki, arrived at Russell in the Auckland-Russell ocean race which started from the Waitemata on Christmas Eve. The first placed in tire mullet boats over the same course was Rakoa. According to advice received today all the boats, both keelers and mullet boats, arrived at Russell during the morning after a quiet voyage. A slight breeze prevailed lor the most part. Setting off in the twilight and moving gently down harbour before a light air, the fleet of yachts racing from Auckland to Russell looked almost spectral as they faded into the distance. The gun was fired at 7.34, the boats starting in close formation within a few seconds of one another. The keel yachts got away in the following order; Rangi, Windward, Ida, lorangi. Thelma, Janet and Ariki. In the event for mullet boats, which was started simultaneously with that for the big yachts, Rakoa was in best position, with the others following in this order: Celox, Omatere, Starloch, Starlight. The following are the results: KEELERS Ariki (scr.) 1 Windward (4h 20m) 2 lorangi (26m) 3 MULLET BOATS Rakoa (3h 30m) 1 Starlight (15m) .. 2 Omatere (20m) 3
