THE FIRST NOEL
COMING OF WISE MEN TO GREET THE BABE LESSON FOR THE WORLD Speaking at the Christmas service at Mount Roskill Congregational Church yesterday morning, Pastor Reuben E. Dowle took for his text Matt. ii. f 11, “And when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto Him gifts; gold, frankincense and myrrh.” “These men of Christ’s day were constantly looking for the coming of Tho Desire of all nations, 4 ” said the preacher. “They had keen eyes when scanning the heavens. And now, at last, they saw the star in the east, and were intellectually satisfied that a most wonderful event was happening. Their minds were open to truth coming from any direction. Yes! intellect open to truth cannot fail to recognise that in Christ the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and ‘that we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.’
“Probably the intellectual sins of the present age are more dangerous to our national safety than those grosser sins that afflict the world so much,” the preacher continued. “Those sins, intellectual and grass, the Divine Redeemer came to put away by His life, example and atonement. “The Magi, it is said, travelled about 3,000 miles to welcome the Babe of Bethlehem. Ah, yes! Genuine truthseekers, to be honest, must do all possible to realise the meaning of the incarnation of the San of God. The wise men, when they had seen the young Child with Mary, His mother, fell down and worshipped Him. Thus do all really wise, learned and thoughtful people, great minds by the force of facts, own Jesus Christ as the Saviour of the world.
“A Saviour from sin and misery in this life, and one who can save to the uttermost is offered to mankind. Agi in we celebrate the glorious event. Christ received gold as a King, incense as a God, and myrrh as a man. It is time human beings to a larger degree woke up to at least present to our Redeemer the sacrifice of loving hearts and sincere obedience.”
