Brutal Assault Made
on Dargaville Woman ATTACK AT NIGHT ROBBERY THE MOTIVE Press Association DARGAVILLE, Today. A brutal assault was committed on Mrs. C. E. Bernard, Parore Street, by a person as yet not arrested, on Saturday evening, between eight and nine o’clock. Mrs. Bernard had been out shopping, and was taking a short cut along the railway line to her home, when she was knocked down in Normanby Street, where the railway crosses the road. She was picked up by Mrs. Thompson, who found that she was badly knocked about, her face bearing witness to the severe handling she had undergone. Her dental plate was broken in several places. Robbery was evidently the object of the assault, as her handbag, containing money, is missing. Mrs. Bernard was taken to a friend’s house, where medical aid was summoned, and it will be some days before she will he able to be about again. At a late hour today no trace of her assailant had been obtained.
