HELMET KNOCKED OFF
WOMAN ASSAULTS POLICE SERGEANT Knocking off policemen’s helmets is a sport one usually associates with University undergraduates in London, but Ethel Maud Mackie struck a blow, or rather two blows, for women’s rights last, evening. Mackie, a domestic, aged 38, w r as charged at the Police Court this morning with assaulting Sergeant Clist. Mr. Bartleet appeared for her and entered a plea of guilty to the technical offence.
According to Sergeant Clist, he had accosted accused outside an hotel in Victoria Street last evening, when she was under the influence of liquor. He had asked her where she lived and she wanted to know what business it was of his. Witness had advised the woman to go home and walked away. The next thing he knew his shako was knocked off and he was struck a blow with a handbag.
Mr. Bartleet said that accused had not had a drink all day. She was waiting for her father, an old man of 74, when the sergeant had accosted her. She admitted poking the sergeant in the stomach but was an excitable woman. Mackie w*as fined £l, in default three days' imprisonment.
