HORTICULTURAL TRADES
AUCKLAND COUNCIL’S WORK REMITS FOR CONFERENCE Satisfactory progress in the work of the Auckland branch of the Horticultural Trades Association was reported to the annual meeting of the district council on Thursday evening. Mr. J. W. Elmslie presided. The past year's activities were reviewed by Mr. Elmslie, who commented appreciatively upon the fact that the first competition for the Loder Cup. which had been conducted in Auckland, had been won this year by the firm of Duncan and Davies, of Xew Plymouth, of which the Dominion president of the association was head. The contest would be held in Dunedin next year. The chairman eulogised the service of the Dominion president, Mr. Davies, whose visits to Auckland were appreciated. The Auckland district council was in a strong position and the membership was increasing. He expressed the hope that, in addition to the official delegates, all members would attend the conference in Wellington between January 14 and 17.
In accepting with regret the resignation of Mr. A. G. Brown, the council decided to send him a letter of appreciation of his long services. The election of officers resulted: Chairman, Mr. J. H. Cutler (New Lynn); vice-chairmen, Messrs. E. Hoskins (Opaheke) and E. A. Herd (Onehunga); hon. secretary Mr. A. Cole; assistant secretary, Mr. C. C». Hopkins's; hon. treasurer Mr. Jas. Allen (Panmure); past chairman, with a seat on the executive, Mr. J. W. Emslie (Grey Lynn). The following committees were reappointed wim power to add: Annual and bedding plants, convener, Mr. J. Allen; rose, fruit tree and shrubs, convener, Ml. W. S. Johnston; bulb, convener, Mr. A. G. Brown. Mr. YV. S. Johnston was appointed auditor. , .. Remits :o be forwarded to the conference are as under: “That the attention of conference be called to the need for the use of standard plant names in all catalogues.” . “That the conference approve or tne establishment of agricultural high schools near all important centres ot population.” _ ■, “That the conference endorse and support the educational work and the botanic gardens scheme as urged by the New Zealand Institute of HortiCU “That the reintroduction of the Urban Farms’ Rating Bill be urged on the next session of Parliament. “That the conference support the establishment of a horticultural training school and urge on the Government the need for a horticultural research station where novelties in fruits and flowers and root stocks may be tested out.” “That the conference urge on Government the establishment o. a sectional botanic garden on the lines suggested by the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture” ,
