Mr. Sidney Ensor was elected unopposed as a borough councillor to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr. R. Cox.
The IXA concert company, of Auckland, gave a most successful concert at Thames on behalf of the ThamesHauraki Qricket Association. The association will benefit to the extent of £3O by the Aucklanders’ effort.
The Waiomo queen carnival is in full swing. The country candidate, Miss Mavis Elliot, is making a big bid for victory, and nightly functions are held to further her chance. The Thames business nominee, Miss Phylis Boyle, and the sports queen, Miss Jessie Grubb, are busy organising, and various events are being held on their behalf.
Yesterday afternoon the official handing over of the children’s playground to the Borough of Thames took place. Mr. E. Watson, chairman of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Committee, in asking the Mayor to accept the playground, said his committee was gratified that the £ 313 surplus from the celebrations had made it possible, with the Government subsidy, to provide a play area for the children, and he had much pleasure in handing it over.
The Mayor, Mr. W. Bongard, in receiving the gift, thanked the Diamond Jubilee Committee for the efforts they had made on behalf of the children.
