A LITTLE JOURNEY TO ROME
(Contributed) “All roads lead to Rome,” said the Latins, and if you take the lift to the fourth floor of Union Buildings in Customs Street you will surely find Rome at the end of the passage. Tnat is, you will be personally conducted by way of a very delightful collection of water-colours, the work of Jocelyn Brown, who jointly with her husband. Mr. A. J. Brown, is holding an exhibition of pictures. Mrs. Brown’s work is already familiar through her connection with the Auckland Society of Arts. It will be only necessary to name a few of the 50 pictures listed to give some idea of their diversity and charm. “Priest’s Garden. Rome,” “Borghese Gardens, Rome,’* “Temple of Castor and Pollux” (A. J. Brown), and again leaving Rome to “Cloister Sta. Maria delle Grazic. —Milan,” with its beautiful columns and warm light, “Dante’s Tomb, Ravenna.” “San Lorenzo,” Verona “Assisi,” the old town in the Umbrian Hills; the bridge at Albi across the Tarne in Southern France, showing Jie old and unique Cathedral of St. Cecile beyond. So even is the quality of this choice collection that one might choose with eyes shut and be perfectly happy with the result. They are ah of them lovable and intimate —and very modestly priced. A new idea in the way of furniture decoration ifi to have your chair covers made of plain coloured linen, with only a flounce of cretonne in a gay pattern. Curtains and pouffe can be carried out in the same “plain and patterned” scheme. If Will make a change from the all-over cretonnes we have got :.® used to.
