TALKIES AT GRAND
“THE GLAD RAG DOLL” The delightfully amusing comedydrama, “The Glad Rag Doll,” has been chosen as the opening talkie attraction at the Grand Theatre today. The story opens on the Broadway stage, where Dolores Costello, as “the girl,” is cast as a popular actress, whose alluring and captivating ways win the love of the younger son of an aristocratic family. How she is first despised by the proud family, how by stripping them of their veneer of false ultra-respectability, she endears herself to them, and how she eventually marries the elder brother, form a theme of absorbing interest. The Grand’s new programme wall also include several shorter talkie items. PRINCE EDWARD Vilma Hanky’s fine picture, “The Awakening,” continues to be shown at the Prince Edward Theatre. This is a beautiful picture with powerful dramatic episodes connected with the early days of the war in Alsace, inset in a gorgeous romance between Miss Banky and Walter Byron. It is soundsynchronised throughout with songs and music.
In addition an excellent supporting programme is shown, comprising talkie featurettes and the silent picture, “The Devil Horse,” introducing Rex, the wild horse actor.
