TE AROHA TOPICS

MARBLE KING’S SURPRISE

ARCHEEN FOR ELLERSLIE TE AROHA, Friday. ! C. Mallowes has been warmly compli- ! men ted on his Waipa success with j Master La tour. When he got the Gen- | oral Latour gelding a few months ago i he was somewhat in the rough, but ! latterly has lined down considerably and now bears a well-trained appearance. His owners were present to j witness a gallop last week and were j prepared to see the horse run well for- • ward. Mallowes has not set Bert Hinkler much work lately, but tho Quin Abbey gelding would soon bo ready to race, as he exercises himself freely in the paddock. Light work apparently suits the St. Amans gelding Taumai. Most of his exercise is done at his owner's property, Waihou. and on the local tracks ho is seldom asked to execute fast work. He looks all the better for his outing at Te Awamutu. Backed the Wrong One The Glen Albyn filly Miss Albvn was expected to run well in the Waipa Plate and many local sports backed her in preference to Master Latour. She is not well seasoned yet, but has both pace and gameness, which in due course will stand to her. The forward horses in J. Wallace’s stable are Sir Russell, Antique and Lucky Alice. The two first-named will be raced at Ellerslie. Sir Russell is expected to take his place in the Christmas Handicap field, and if he does he may be well tried out over the mile. So far he has borne out Wallace’s opinion of him that when brought to proper condition he would race well. While Archeen has been winning races for G. Reid’s stable. Ah Wera and St. Warrigal have been taking an enforced rest from galloping work. The first-named has a wound on the foreleg, injured at Paeroa early in the year, while St. Warrigal had a leg cut in the railway box on the way back from Taumarunui. Both horses are recovering slowly, but are giving their trainer more work than usual to attend to them. Since meeting with an accident at Woodville, J. W. Chandler has been staying a few days at Te Awamutu, and is expected home on Friday. He was well booked up for riding at different meetings, while his services on the local tracks are certainly being missed. A Coming Handicapper? Local sports did not treat Marble King seriously as a mile and a-quarter proposition, and his running in the Te Awamutu Cup was somewhat of a surprise to them. The Marble Arch gelding had been treated to road and hill work for some weeks, and has thrived on this treatment. He is to make the Ellerslie trip and will probably carry the colours on the second day. In the Te Awamutu Cup he was ridden to orders, but pulled too hard in the early stages to score a win. King Lap, owned by a Matamata sportsman, is to be given a paddock spell until the#autumn, as it is considered he may be a bit on the small side to win races as a two-year-old. If he had been kept going a little longer he might have paid his way during January and February, as he is fairly speedy in his work. Black Mairo is not in commission this week, as since running at Waipa he is somewhat sore, with swollen joints. The trouble may not be serious, and it is quite on the cards that the Glen Albyn gelding will be working again soon. He is an improbable starter at the Auckland meeting, and the only one from Cox’s stable to compete at Ellerslie may be The Lamb. Archeen was schooled on Tuesday over the regulation height fences, and he negotiated them well. He is holding his condition well, so may run at least prominently on Boxing Bay. unless the two miles is too far for him. On Thursday the training tracks were in fair order after the previous day’s rain. The two-year-old Leasehold dashed over four furlongs in taking style. Archeen put in two rounds at a good working pace and moved very freely throughout. Trig and Te Aparangi went together for six furlongs and finished abreast in 1.18 3-5. The Lamb and Glenison covered a mile at better than three-quarter pace, and Miss Albyn, looking better than ever, executed a satisfactory six furlongs. Volimond put in a round on the plough. She has settled down to her track work very soberly and should run well in her next start. Taumai took 1.8 1-5 for five furlongs on' the plough, and the Marble Arch —Lacemaker filly bowled along nicely for seven furlongs. Marble King hit out freely for five furlongs on the plough in 1.6 3-5, Sir Russell and Antique slipped over five furlongs on the outside grass In 1.4 4-5, and Lucky Alice went a round at three-quarter pace. Glenstar took 1.5 for five furlongs and Kanui did a fair working gallop.
