CREW DELAYS KAIAPOI
FIREMAN ARRESTED SAILING THIS AFTERNOON The V n ion Company's Kaiapo:. J which was scheduled to leave Auokj land at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon for Greyinouth. was delayed owing to a member of her crew being arrested for drunkenness and detained at the Central Police Station. Although a new man was tmgaged. the remainder of the crew took excepj tion to him. and further difficulty was I experienced in replacing him, conse iiuently the departure of the vessel was postponed until this morning. The arrested man. a fireman, was taken down to Western Wharf this morning, while th police endeavoured to collect his fine from the ship, w hereupon he would be allowed to rejoin the vessel there and then. The police were not. at first successful, and the man was taken awnv again. I.ater. however, the affair was cleared up. and he was returned to the Kaiapo! at 1.25 o’clock this afternoon. The ship was unable to get away j then, however, as another fireman was I missing. Officials of the Union Company i stated then that effort were being made to secure another fireman u? ■ soon as possible, and it was hoped to j dispatch the Kaiapoi later in the after j noon.
