TRIO OF VAGRANTS
TWO WOMEN GAOLED OTHER GIVEN CHANCE As a result of a patrol of the City by Constable Christiansen, three women were convicted on charges of | vagrancy at the Police Court this ' morning. Phyllis Mary Hunt and Annie Hartley were each sentenced to three months* imprisonment. Prances Norah Clark was given another chance on condition that she took out a prohibition order. Hunt, a packer aged 25, Clark, a domestic aged 29, and Hartley, aged 53, were all charged, with being idle and disorderly, in that they consorted with persons reputed to be of bad chat acter. All three pleaded not guilty. Hunt and Clark were charged with being found drunk in Kingston Street and Hartley with being drunk in Hobson Street. Mr. Smyth appeared for Hunt, but did not proceed with the defence after hearing police evidence. Constable Christiansen said that all three women had been about the hotels very frequently. Hunt and Clark were arrested in a taxi, where they Were accompanied by seamen who were strangers to them. They also had beer with them. Hunt particularly had been accosting strange men in the street. Clark was making her first appearance in court. Drink was her trouble. It was to her house in Point Chevalier that the party was on its way. Mr. Smyth asked for leniency on behalf of Hunt. She was to be married to a seaman next week. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: I think we had better save the seaman. Mr. Smyth: He is sufficiently experienced to take care of himself. It may give Hunt a chance to get away from her bad associates. “I think she had better extend her engagement to her sailor for three months,” commented the magistrate,
imposing the term of imprisonment. Clark, having promised to take out l a prohibition order, was ordered to | come up for sentence when callec. j upon, !
