Notes from the Council Chamber
A deputation representing ratepayers of Waterview, Avondale, asked the City Council last evening for improved drainage and reduced sanitary charges. The Works Committee will report.
Ratepayers who have not paid their rates before Wednesday, January 15, 1930, will be required to pay an additional 10 per cent. The council has power to make the penalty after six months and 14 days from the date of original demand.
The Works Committee will consider the resolution from the recent conference of local bodies referring a proposal to unite to form a regional planning scheme, and to decide the area to be included.
Not Copperplate The Mayor: Three of us have tried to read this amendment, and can make nothing of it.
Cr. Lundon: Well, sir, we can’t all write copperplate while we are standing up.
Suspicion? Cr. J, R. Lundon: There has at times been a suspicion in the minds of the councillors that I know something about law. A Voice: Only a suspicion! At 10.35 p.m. the Alayor asked the the council if it wished to give Cr. Lundon an extension of speaking time —the councillor was speaking at length on market rentals. Councillors, in a chorus: No-o-o! * * * Clean Hands “I defy any man in this city to say that my hands have got any dirt on them.”—Cr. AI. J. Bennett on market leases. On the motion of the Deputy-ATayor, Cr. A. J. Entrican, the council recorded its appreciation of the work accomplished at Huia Dam, and of the services of Mr. James Tyler, acting-City Engineer. The Water Committee will visit properties offered in connection with the proposed water supply from Mangatangi, and Alangatawhiri, on January 15.
