AWARDS FOR SCHOLARS

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES WESLEY COLLEGE SUCCESSES “We are in strong sympathy with the plea of the Minister of Education for an agricultural bias in education, but it is equally necessary to give boys who are going on the land the foundations of a good cultural education, and an appreciation of the great intellectual inheritance of our race,” said the principal, Mr. R. C. Clark, in giving his report at the annual prizegiving ceremony of the Wesley College yesterday afternoon. Mr. Clark referred to the loss suffered by the death of Mr. S. J. Ambury and Mr. A. C. Caughey, two men who were keenly interested in the welfare of the college, and he would like to see their names commemorated by some tablet or other fitting memorial in the chapel. “We have noted with satisfaction the swing of the pendulum concerning examinations.” said Mr. Clark. “For some years past it has been customary to belabour" the examination system with great vigour. It is true that an over estimation of the value of the system, coupled with a clinging to

archaic methods, has done much to deserve this, but it is equally true that no better way has yet been found of testing and measuring tlie capabilities of the student.

“It is, however, necessary* that the technique of conducting examinations should b© improved, and that more attention should bo given to the setting and marking of papers. We should have trained examiners for what is a very difficult task. We would also stress th© necessity for breadth of appeal in examinations. In the past one had to pass through a very narrow gateway indeed, and much hardship was caused by making all boys conform to a very narrow syllabus and curriculum. Let the examination system bo not a fetish, but a stimulative,” concluded Mr. Clark. The Rev. E. Brake, chairman of the College Board, who presided over the large gathering of parents, friends and boys of the school, said that the school was unique and was unlike the majority of others in New Zealand, in that boys were taken up to the matriculation standard as well as thoroughly learning th© methods of farming. Before presenting the prizes, the Rev. J. F. Goldie addressed the boys. He said that not to win a prize did not mean lack of ability. It was not always the best man who got the prize. Buring th© afternoon th© Maori boys of the college entertained those present with a haka and numerous songs, while musical items were also given by boys of the school. After the prize-giving, afternoon tea was served. PRIZES AWARDED
