SOUTHAMPTON MURDER
UNEXPECTED ARREST MADE BY POLICE A WITNESS CHARGED LONDON, Tuesday. There has been an unexpected development in the unsolved mystery of the murder at Southampton of Mr. Vivian Messiter, whose body was found in a garage in January. William Podmore, a witness at the inquest, whose statement to the police suggested that he was the last man to see Messiter alive, was arrested by Scotland Yard officers as he was leaving Wandsworth Prison. He was taken to Southampton, where he was charged with murder, and remanded. The body of Mr. Messiter was found inside a private garage at Southampton. The door was padlocked outside. Mr. Messiter had been missing 10 weeks. The theory of the police was that the murder was committed away from the garage and that the body was taken there subsequently. A post-mortem examination revealed the fact that death occurred two months before the discovery. Deceased was last seen oh October 30. Mr. Messiter was born in Somerset. For a long time he resided in America or on the Continent. He was a major with the Canadian troops in the war. It is believed he has a wife in America. The murder was committed soon after his appointment to Southampton as the manager of an American oil company.
