CHANGE OF TEACHERS

SCHOOL COMMITTEES’ PROTEST QUARTERLY MEETING HELD Objection to the transfer of school teachers when the annual examinations were near at hand, was made at a meeting of the Auckland Primary School Committees’ Association last evening. The meeting was the final quarterly meeting of 1929, and was held in the Teachers’ Institute room, the president, Mr. G. E. Chappell, presiding. There was a poor attendance, probably due, as the chairman pointed out, to the approach of the holiday season. Mr. T. Clifton Webb, for the Dargaville District High School Committee, sponsored a remit that a protest be made against teachers being transferred at a time close to the end of the school year. It was explained by Mr. G. Brownlee, a member of the Education Board, that such a course was avoided wherever possible. There were difficulties, however. When a school went down a grade, for instance, they could not reduce a mastex-’s salary, so a change was imperative. Similarly in a case of death. A suggestion that other, local bodies should follow the lead of the City Council in sending traffic officers to lecture school children on traffic regulations was made by Mr. Brownlee. The City Council Traffic Department had recently visited schools in the City area, and headmasters were very satisfied with the results. Following comments by the chairman on a remit from the Te Kuiti District High School Committee, it was decided to appeal again for an increased ‘Government allowance for ordinary school purposes. Accompanying the remit was a memorandum to the effect that although the cost of upkeep of the Te Kuiti District High School had increased on account of there being now two separate buildings, requests for further financial assistance had been of no avail. The allowance was about £l7B a year, and the expenditure for the caretaker alone amounted to £IBO.
