Auckland Cup Developments

Southern Horses at Ellerslie

The Auckland Cup is to be run at Ellerslie today week, Thursday, December 26.

Goshawk and Vertigrern are to be ridden in the Auckland Cup by J. Cammick and E. Ludlow respectively. The fact that a rider was engaged yesterday for Vertigern indicates that there is every possibility of the Rossendale gelding taking his chance in the Auckland Cup. Nevertheless, in view of what happened in the last Auckland Cup with this horse, and again in the W.R.C. Handicap at Trentham seven weeks ago, local sportsmen will believe that he is to run only when they see him at the barrier.

R would appear as if Hastings trainer J. Cameron is to have two strings to his how in the Auckland Cup, for already he has engaged riders for two of his charges, Goshawk and Merry Mint. They run in different interests, Goshawk carrying his trainer’s colours, while Merry Mine will bear the navy blue and green stripes of the Gisborne sportsman, Mr. F. H. Goodman, a racing livery made popular to Northerners by that good horse Polonett.

Doubtful starters in the Christmas Handicap at Ellerslie on Boxing Day will probably include Panther, Merry Mint, Great Charter, Kick Off, The Hawk, High Pitch, The Lover and Romford.

E. Ludlow will ride King Midas, Vertigern, Thespis, and Hannibal at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.

The Thoroughbred Special The special race train from Wellington pulled into Ellerslie about 9.30 o’clock this morning, after a good run through. Compared with recent years the special was poorly patronised by owners, only 21 horses being aboard, representing about 40 per cent, of those usually conveyed by this train. So many horses being engaged at the meeting at Hawera yesterday and today accounted for this. Tomorrow morning’s express will bring a dozen horses from the South, and there are another dozen due on Saturday morning. Hawera trainer J. Brown is expected on Sunday morning with Silvermine and the two-year-old Chief Link. The following list shows the horses that were on this morning’s train, together with the names of their trainers: W. D. Moroney (Masterton). —Vertigern, Count Palatine, Tenterden and King Midas. F. D. Jones (Riccarton). —Paquito and Dunraven. T. H. Gillett (Riccarton). —Count Cavour and Amor. A. E. Wormald (Riccarton). —Pangolin. • J. H. Prosser (Riccarton). —Great Star. W. Rayner (Wanganui).—Drastic and Pedestal. S. J. Reid (Trentham). —Historic and Panther. H. Telford (Trentham). —Open Cheque. J. McLaughlin (Trentham). —Duellona. The following horses engaged at the forthcoming trotting carnival were also on the train:—Royal Silk, Genuine, Purser, Lady Fan and Acre.
