UNEQUAL BUS FARES

ROSKILL ROAD BOARD COMPLAINT Some months ago the Wesley College Trust erected a retaining wall in Kingswood Terrace, Mount Roskill, and obtained dedication of the road running alongside it. Within a short time the board’s engineer reported that the wall showed signs of erosion by the action of sea-water in the Manu* kau Harbour. The Wesley Trust was therefore, requested to effect necessary repairs to the wall, and a deputation from the Mount Roskill Road Board interviewed and explained the position to the trustees. At last evening’s meeting of the Road Board a letter was received from the Wesley Trust notifying that the trustees were hot convinced of any justification in contributing toward the proposed repairs and blaming the storm-water from the board’s lands for any damage to the wall. The chairman, Mr. E. F. Jones, remarked that the board should have withheld dedication of the road for a further term of six months, but that having accepted dedication the board would have to bear the cost of repairs. On the recommendation of Mr. E. A. Pearce, chairman of the Works Committee, it was agreed to proceed* immediately with the work oi tarring the whole of the pathways in the district not treated last year. On the motion of the chairman, the foreman of works was granted a salary increase of .£SO a year. Mr. Jones pointed out that since dispensing with the services of a resident engineer, the duties of the foreman had been considerably increased. Mr. E. A. Pearce drew attention to the disparity in the charges on the Buckland Road service with those on other bus routes in respect to workers’ tickets. While the weekly fares for workers on the Point Chevalier, Avondale and Blockhouse Bay routes were 3s 9d, 4s 3d and 4s 3d, respectively, no workers’ tickets were issued on the Buckland Road service, the lowest weekly concession fare being 5s (>d. The Transport Board is to be requested to institute workers’ tickets on the Buckland Road route on a similar basis to those on all other -bus
