Turf Notes

CONDUCTED BY "EARLY BIRD

Change of Riders? In the event of R. McTavish failing: ;to make the weight (7.7) for Vall&r |in the Railway Handicap, this brilliant sprinter will probably be ridden by E. Ludlow, who has steered the Valkyrian gelding in his track essays lately. Fail* Only Alloj' has had 'many chances to make good since he came under .JWilliamson’s guidance, and seemingly he will never be better than a moderate. There is no doubt he can gallop —that was demonstrated in the maiden class at Avondale in the early spring—but he has made attempts from six to nine furlongs and invariably runs only moderately. Alloy was thoroughly trounced in a gallop at Ellerslie yesterday and that certainly does not enhance his prospects. Undeniable Chance Few horses have raced with such consistency as Lady’s Boy this season, and it is a matter for speculation why he has not come under marked, notice as the prospective winner of the Railway Handicap. He represents winning form and his brilliancy should assist him to be in the firing line when the field settles down to serious business. Trainer T. Carmont has experienced a very satisfactory season to date with this versatile performer, and it should not surprise if he caps all by securing the rich prize on Boxing Bay, for on appearances Lady’s Boy has never been better. At Kawakawa The Bay of Islands Racing Club will hold its annual race meeting on the Kawakawa Racecourse on Saturday, January 18. The sum allotted to the seven events, which form the programme, amounts to £655, the Kawaka.wa Cup of £2OO (15 miles') being the principal event. dominations for all events - close on Friday, January 3. Nominations may be lodged either with the secretary, Mr. T. J. V. Dunlop, Kawakawa, or with Messrs. Blomfield and Company, High Street, Auckland. Auckland Acceptances Acceptances for the Auckland Cup, Railway Handicap, Robinson Handicap, Grafton Hurdle Race, Nursery Handicap, and Christmas Handicap, together with final payments for the Queen’s Plate, Great Northern Foal Stakes, Great Northern Derby and Royal Stakes, close jiext Friday at 5 p.m., with the secretary. Mr. W.. S. Spence. Thames Entries Nominations for all events to be run at the Thames- Jockey Club’s summer meeting close next Friday at 5 p.m., and the same may be lodged either with the secretary, Mr. A. C. Rae, Thames, •or with Mr. F. D. McVay, secretary Takapuna Jockey Club, Shortland Street, Auckland. For Second Day Owner-trainer H. Rama has no cause for regret at the manner in which Taneriri is acquitting himself in his training at present. The brother to Hoariri has made a lot of improvement lately, and a good race looks to be concealed in him. Taneriri’s best performance was a second to Paddon in the Whyte Memorial Handicap at Trentham last July, and subsequently he won a sprint event at Gisborne, efforts which go to show he is full of possibilities. Taneriri has no engagement on Boxing Day, but it is probable he will make an appearance on the second day of the Auckland meeting. Progressing Latest news of the well-known Australian sportsman. Eric Connolly, is that he is making good progress toward recovery from his recent illness, and is expected to be convalescent shortly. The report that his racing days have ended appears to be premature, for already he and his family are contemplating a trip to Sydney for the autumn. Later they may leave for an extended tour of the old world. A Cup Fancy Star Stranger is one of the ruling favourites for the Auckland Cup. and with his very favourable impost he is being selected as being very hard to beat in that event. He has not won a race this season, but his form has been good, and if he shows anything like his best form in the Egmont Cup tomorrow, no doubt he will firm for the more important event. Star Stranger is one of the proved stayers in the Auckland Cup field. He has scored many important wins over long distances, and he holds two Australian and New Zealand records—one fo.r 11 furlongs and the other for two miles. Over a distance of ground he is a weight-for-age horse, and with 81b under the scale he is going to offer stout opposition at Ellerslie, especially if he is in the same form as when he was beaten in the Mitchelson Cup by Historic.
