COMPENSATION CLAIMS
COAL-MINER’S INJURIES Compensation for injuries suffered by coalmine employees was claimed in the Arbitration Court today. A miner, Evan Bryant (Mr. O’Regan), sued the Taupiri Coal Mines, Limited, (Mr. Richmond) for compensation for a dislocated cartilege which was caused by twisting his knee on November 9, 1928. He claimed to be totally disabled. Wages had been paid by the company until May 16 this year, and a further amount representing payments to December 18, had been paid into Court. Medical evidence for the claimant was given by Drs. S. A. Bull and W. C. McCaw, who considered the leg disability at 20 to 30 per cent. For the defence, Drs. G. W. Gower, E. C. Bruis, Kenneth Mackenzie and K. Macky claimed that there was no incapacity. The Court decided that the claimant had been fixed for work for some time and entered judgment for the amount paid into Court. Claiming that he had been totally disabled through lacerating his right hand on October 4 last year, Arthur Franklin Humberstone (Mr. O’Regan) sought to recover compensation from the Taupiri Coal Mines, Ltd. (Mr. Richmond) for permanent injury. The sum of £4B was paid by the company as compensation up to February this year. After hearing evidence the court awarded full compensation for 19 weeks, and for 6 per cent, of total disability.
