AUCKLAND’S FROSTS
18 DURING WINTER / AUGUST COLDEST MONTH Eighteen frosts were recorded in Auckland during the past winter, the fii st being on July 3 and the most recent on September 29. The intensity of cold ranged from 1.1 degrees on the night of September 22 to 9.2 degrees on August 15. Heavy frosts early in the winter were followed by mild nights late in July and in mid-August, although August was the coldest month on the average. Frosts in Christchurch were heavier and more regular. An isolated cold snap on February 17 was followed by a period of mild night temperatures. Frosts began in earnest on March 30, and were registered on more than half the nights from then until the final on November 17. The heaviest frost was 14.5 degrees, registered on August 26. a night on which Auckland experienced little cold. On only one occasion was the cold greater in Auckland than in the south, September 22, when S.l degrees were registered in the north as against only 4.3 in Christchurch.
