GIRLS’ GRAMMAR SCHOOL BREAKS UP PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY A roll of 584, an increase of one over the previous year, was disclosed in the report of the headmistress. Miss E. M. Johnston, at the prizegiving ceremony of the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School in the school assembly hall at Howe Street yesterday. A large number of parents and friends was present, the chairman of the board of governors, Professor A. P. W. Thomas, presiding, and presenting the academic prizes. Mrs. E. Robertson presented the sports trophies. The headmistress’s report stated that a new building containing two new rooms and an attached wooden room had added considerably to the comfort of the staff and pupils. It was hoped that the new basketball court, which was badly needed, would be ready for use early in the school year. The thanks of the school were due to the board* of governors for a contribution of £ls to the school library. A gift of £6 6s from the Old Girls’ Association for the prize fund, and many further donations, were also acknowledged. Best wishes were extended to three mistresses who were leaving the school, Miss F. E. Macdonald, Miss L. E. Forde and Miss A. H. E. Schroder. The publication of an anthology of verse, containing selections from the school magazines over a period of 20 years, was recorded, and Miss C. F. Hull was complimented, on editing the book, which had received much commendation. Several part-songs were sung by the pupils, after which the prizes were presented.
