NEW P.O. WANTED
ONEHUNGA COUNCIL’S REQUEST HOLIDAYS FOR WORKMEN Strong criticism was directed against the cramped accommodation of the Royal Oak Post Office at the meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council last evening. Councillor S. Vella asserted that the locality had completely outgrown the present office, which was leased when there were but two or three shops in the vicinity. Now, he said, there were 40. He moved that the council advocate the erection of a new building on the site reserved for that purpose on the corner of Manukau and Campbell Roads, or, failing that, the Government should immediately secure larger premises. This was supported by the Mayor, who thought the council should co-op-erate with the Chamber of Commerce on the question. The motion was carried and Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., is to be requested to assist in fulfilling the council’s request. Permission was given the United Churches Association to hold religious services on the Onehunga beach on Sunday afternoons during the summer months. The general manager of the Auckland Power Board notified that, as the necessary fittings had now arrived, no time would be lost in installing additional street lights asked for by the council some months ago. The medical officer of health reported that the periodical analysis of the borough’s water had proved satisfactory. New by-laws were confirmed regulating the sale of fish and providing for specified stands for fish hawkers; prescribing regulation two-piece bathing costumes for persons more than 12 years of age using the borough beaches, and declaring the shopping centre at Te Papapa a brick area. On the application of Cr. F. W. Mountjoy a recommendation of the council-in-committee was adopted, authorising him to pledge the council to the extent of £ls toward the expenses of the proposed actuarial investigation into the Transport Board’s accounts. The Rev. H. M. Smyth, chairman of St. Peter’s Cemetery Board, wrote thanking the council for its assistance in improving the appearance of the cemetery and reqLiesting that a path through the grounds should be maintained by the council, otherwise the board would be compelled to close it. Mr. Smyth added that a subsidy of £5 would be made toward the cost of repairing the thoroughfare. It was decided to accept the offer and do the necessary work. An extension of the lease of the Coronation Hall site to the St. John Ambulance Association was granted, and an offer was accepted from the Onehunga branch of the association to provide patrols on the beaches during the summer months. A vote of condolence was passed in silence with the clergy and laity of the Roman Catholic Church in the loss caused by the death of Bishop Cleary. The town clerk was instructed to convey the council’s regret to Monsignor Cahill, of Onehunga. The town clerk was instructed to add a penalty of ten per cent, to all unpaid rates. A supplementary roll was authorised to be issued for use in connection with the forthcoming Transport Board election. The town clerk intimated that 192 additional names had been added to the roll since the Mayoral election in May last. It was decided to suspend council meetings from December 23 to January All borough workmen with two or more years’ service are to be granted ten days’ leave of absence on full pay as a Christmas holiday and are to be paid in advance.
