BATTLE FOR RUNS
GRAMMAR BATTING IN SHIELD GAME CHRISTCHURCH'S GOOD POSITION Facing Christchurch Boys’ High School’s big first innings score of 371, the Auckland Grammar School first eleven, with one wicket down for continued its first innings at Eden Park j at 9.33 today, in the Heathcote Williams Shield challenge match. j The wicket, which was a perfect batsman’s wicket yesterday, was* very soft on top when the game was resumed, as a result of the shower this morning. Hounsell and Jamieson were the opening bowlers, and with the ball rising sharply Grammar’s second wicket pair, Jessup, not out 7, and Dixon, not out 0, had an uncomfortable time for a while. Dixon soon mastered the' attack, however, and although the scoring rate was slow, the total mounted gradually. Jessup was batting cautiously, picking the right ball before having a hit. The pair took the score to 96 before Dixon slammed one round to square-leg for Cobden to make no mistake with the catch. Dixon’s total of 38 included five twos, one three and two fours. Jessup at that stage had just entered the thirties. FOUR DOWN FOR 130 The next four runs were not scored for a quarter of an hour, when the century was hoisted after Grammar’s innings had been in progress for exactly two hours. Dawson and Parsons then took over the attack, both batsmen finding the former’s over-pitched slows much to their liking. Jessup turned him to leg for a single," and Harris scored a boundary in the same direction off the next ball. The sky was overcast, and with a slight drizzle falling all the time the bowlers were making frequent use of sawdust. Hounsell. came back, vice Parsons, and Jamieson replaced Dawson as the bowlers. Jessup got a single off ITounsell’s first over and brought his total to 41. Harris was then 13, and the total 120 for two wickets. Misfortune overtook Jessup, however, when he faced Jamieson and popped one into Parson’s hands at mid-on, off Jamieson. Jessup had batted 2 hours 20 minutes for his 41, which was made up chiefly of singles. Three wickets were then down for 120. The incomer, Burridge, played out Jamieson’s over, which was a maiden. Harris was at home to Hounsell’s fast deliveries, glancing him neatly to the leg boundary and cutting him for a single in one over. He then swung Jamieson over the chalk, bringing his tally to 22 and the side’s score to 129. The next wicket fell at 11.40, when Hounsell clean-bowled Harris for 22, with the total at 130 for four wickets. GRAMMAR SLUMPS The next man in, Howard, did not long survive Hounsell’s fast deliveries, being clean-bowled when he had scored two. The Grammar slump had now set in with a vengeance, and five wickets were down for 138. Burridge and Hamilton were then associated in a profitable partnership, taking the total to within sight of the doublecentury. Burridge popped an easy catch into Hounsell’s hands in front of the wicket, off Dawson, and six were down for 160. Hamilton followed two runs later, caught behind off Hounsell for nine. Robinson went for a “duck,” and eight wickets were down, for 162. The luncheon adjournment was then taken, with Grammar fighting to avert a follow-on.
