WHAT GOVERNMENT FIGURES SHOW MORE MEN EMPLOYED (From Our Resident Reporter) WELLINGTON, Today. An increase of 9,128 in the number of persons permanently employed on farms in New Zealand, when the figures for the 1928-29 season are compared with those for 1927-28, is shown in the Government Statistician’s report on the agricultural and pastoral production of the Dominion. T?ie number for 1928-29 was returned as 138,609, as against 129,481 in 192728. From the point of view of persons employed, the dairying industry ranks easily first, 56,825 males and 17,861 females being employed. Temporary workers are not included in the above figures. The advent of hydro-electric power is being taken full advantage of in the dairying industry. Since 1921 the use of electric-power on farms has increased enormously. The number of motors returned in that year were 456, with a nominal horse-power of 1,611, as against 10,806 and 20.785, respectively, in 1928, and 13,377 and 24,713 this year.
