LEN ELLIOTT SKITTLES PONSONBY WICKETS

Y.M.C.A. IN STRONG POSITION With. 124. runs on for the loss of four wickets at one stage of Saturday’s game, Ponsonby was in a strong position against Y.M.C.A., but the tailenders faded away badly and eventually the side was all out for 157. Luck was with Ponsonby when the game began, because both its opening batsmen, Snedden and. Fletcher were missed early off Lyon. In Fletcher’s case this was singularly unfortunate for Y.M.C.A., for Fletcher went on to knock up 4S-—the highest score of the afternoon in the match. Both Snedden and Fletcher scored freely off A. Riddolls, who was sending down a fast ball, but did not keep a very accurate length or direction. Snedden was shaping promisingly when Lyon sent one past his bat, but Fletcher and Monteith carried on undeterred, taking the total from 29 to 76 in quick time. Fletcher did the lion’s share of the scoring, his shots including frequent boundaries. Monteith plodded along slowly, and saw Fletcher strike the homeward trail—cleanbowled by Elliott for 43. The scoring rate quietened down considerably with the departure of Fletcher. Cooper was brought on in place of Lyon, and it was not long before he enticed Monteith out of his crease and had him stumped by Smith. S. G. Smith was content to score chiefly in singles, byt McLeod put plenty of weight behind his shots. Smith was out to a miss-timed stroke,, and McLeod to a brilliant catch by R. Riddolls off Cooper. Neither Guiney npr Finlayson lasted long, and Ponsonby had seven down for 146 at the tea adjournment. The tail-onders stayed at the crease for just over half an hour, but could not add appreciably to the total, and Ponsonby was all out for 157. Y.M.C.A. had just over an hour to bat before stumps when the innings was opened. Sutherland and Banbury were the initial scorers, but they were in no hurry to chase Ponsonby’s total. Banbury reached 11 before falling to the wily S. G. Smith, and Lyon, who followed him, was dismissed by the same bowler without scoring. Sutherland was shaping well, although scoring slowly when Finlayson clfeanbowled him. In his first three overs Finlayson took one wicket for no runs. The Y.M.C.A. batsmen took 70 minutes to bring 48 up. Details:—* PONSONBY First Innings SNEDDEN. b Lyon 18 FLETCHER, b Elliott 43 MONTEITH, stpd.
