WIN FOR ELLERSLIE
WATTS GETS FIRST CENTURY In a game that provided excellent fare for the onlookers, Ellerslie secured an easy two-point win against Albion. Albions innings began at quarter-past four and it was over by 6.5. Watts the Ellerslie batsman scored the first hundred in this season’s cuburban cricket. Mixing a sparkling offdrive with strong shots to leg, he hit up one of the brightest centuries seen for a long day. Such minor factors as inferior bowling, and the batsman’s occasional raggedness can be overlooked in an innings that includes four sixes and 16 fours. He took less than 50 minutes to make the runs. Watkins, if a little more stolid than Watts, gave a good display. Ellerslie, continuing its innings from the previous Saturday, made 217 for eight before declaring. It had started poorly, but Watkins and Elliott soon became associated; and when Watts got going it was just a matter of making enough runs to declare. Albion went in faced with the task of staying there two and a-half hours or scoring 218 runs in that time. The Albion men didn’t have a chance of making the runs, and it soon became evident that only a miracle would see them still batting at 6.30. Except for Minchan’s useful 12 and a bright 15 from Dickson, the Innings lacked interest. Watts was the outstanding bowler, and Matthews took two cheap wickets.
