New Bowling Green is Opened

OLD AUCKLAND CLUB INTERESTING CEREMONY Glorious weather favoured the official opening of the eastern green of the Auckland Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon, when Mr. E. A. Craig and Mrs. Craig held an At Home. There was a very large attendance of members and visitors from other clubs. rpHE scene was a gay one, flags flutfluttered everywhere in the cool breeze and draped the front of the pavilion, whence came the strains of delightful music provided by Air. Gordon Eady’s orchestra. Attractive colour was also lent by the large, brighlty-hued umbrellas placed at intervals round the green, and the panorama of pretty frocks and the colourful blazers of the players. Afternoon tea was served in the upper room and on the balcony of the pavilion, the tables being delightfully arranged with bowls of carnations and sweet peas, with a long front table with bowls of roses in every shade. A cool and pleasant appearance was given by the beautiful baskets of fern, which hung from the ceiling o’f the diningroom and balcony, interspersed with streamers of red, white and blue, the club’s colours. In declaring the green open, the president, Mr. E. A. Craig, said the Auckland Club was the oldest recognised club in the Southern Hemisphere, and for ten years it was the only club in New Zealand. It was founded in 3 801, and was then a swamp, it having cost £1,700 to put it in order. After 14 years another green was being opened which was largely a “labour of love” on the part of many members. After interesting speeches had been made by other speakers, the National Anthem was played, and cheers were given for Mr. and Airs. Craig, an adjournment being made to the new green, where Airs. Craig threw the first jack. A draped frock of sedge green lace

and georgette with a coatee effect, and a wide-brimmed green balibuntal hat with a paradise plunie, was worn by Airs. Craig. Mrs. K.‘ Aickins, who was assisting, wore a frock of floral georgette in rhine blue, with a large felt hat of the same shade. Among those present were:
