THOUGHT HE BOUGHT IT

THIEF’S NOVEL EXCUSE A novel excuse did not save Harold K. Mudgway from being lined 30s and costs for stealing a motor-cycle starter pedal, in the Onehunga Police Court his morning. The pedal belonged to h. W. Chambers, garage proprietor, of Onehunga. Mr. M. Rogers, who appeared for accused, said that Mudgway had entered the shop to buy a chain for his motor-cycle, and while the owner was temporarily absent cutting the chain to tha correct size, accused picked up the pedal off the counter and put it in his pocket. Mudgway had had a few drinks, and when he later discovered the pedal in his pocket, he thought he had bought it. Sergeant O’Neill said that the garage owner and a constable had visited Mudgway’s place of employment, and found the pedal on his machine. He offered to pay double the article’s value if the thing was hushed up. Accused pleaded guilty and asked for the suppression of his name as he held a responsible position at a quarry. The request was refused.
