BIRTHDAY AT SEA
“FATHER OF THE WOOL TRADE” MR. PITT ON NIAGARA One man who is not enjoying a trip on the Niagara is Mr. R. M. Pitt, managing director of Pitt, Son and Badgery, Limited, Sydney. He sailed from Sydney by the Niagara to make his first trip abroad for 30 years. Now he is ill and contemplates leaving the vessel at Auckland instead of going on to Canada and America. Mr. Pitt celebrated his 80th birthday on the trip across the Tasman, and the wireless operators had a busy time with messages of congratulation which were sent to him from all parts of Australia. “The father of the Australian wool trade.” That is Mr. Pitt’s unofficial title in all parts of the Commonwealtn. He has held an auctioneer’s licence for 60 years and every town in New South Wales knows this very acute and businesslike man. His knowledge of stock values is amazing, and there is no one who can compete with him when judging the wool and stock markets.
