CUTTER LOST IN SQUALL
Fears for 11 of Crew SCHOONER BLOWN ASHORE Hurricane Sweeps Fiji United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Received 1.30 p.m. SUVA, Today. THE auxiliary cutter Tui Oakau struck Wakaya Reef, near Levuka, and disappeared in a squall. It is feared that Mr. J. Hennings, the owner, and 11 others aboard have been drowned. The auxiliary schooner Resolution is ashore at Koro Island, and there have been heavy floods in the Navua district. Heavy drowning losses are feared and ten or twelve bodies have been found. Many cattle have been lost and fences to the value of £I,OOO have been destroyed.
The bodies of five Indians have been recovered from the Rewa district. The Government has opened a relief fund and is supplying food to destitute Indians and Fijians. The auxiliary schooner Endeavour returned to Suva last night, after a
week’s buffeting in the recent hurricane. The report of the drowning of seven persons in the Rewa Valley is not confirmed. It is estimated at Taviuni that a loss of from 15 to 20 per cent, will be suffered by the 1930 crops.
