PAPATOETOE’S GALA DAY

SUCCESSFUL FETE AND BABY SHOW BAND ROTUNDA OPENED Assisted by ideal weather conditions on Saturday afternoon, the floral fei* and children’s sports day arranged to celebrate the official opening of the Papatoetoe Park and band rotunda was an unqualified success. Keen interest was displayed in the baby show, and over 100 tiny tots were examined by Dr. Purchase, who was assigned the arduous task of mating the awards. The decorated prams, tricycles a*4 children in fancy dress were judged on the Shirley Road Reserve by M'f. Raymond, after which they marched in procession, headed by the Pap*toeote Town Band, to the park, where a comprehensive programme of children’s sports was held. Mr. T. R. Smytheman, chairman of the Papatoetoe Town Board, extended a hearty welcome to the large crowd, and introduced the various speaker.'. Mr. A. W. Hall, M.P. for Hauraki, officially opened the park, and Mr. "W. Brown, president of the band, opened the band rotunda. Other speakers were Mr. de Clifton and Mr. E. Coles, on behalf of the band. The proceedings were enlivened by an enjoyable programme of musical items by the band. Exhibitions of Scottish dances we » given by Misses Phyllis and Dorothy Gardiner and Sidney Tve. Piper ”*• MacLeod provided the music. Exhibitions of fancy dances w’ere given *»' pupils of Miss Peggy Holmes. Before the function closed, Mr?. Smytheman presented a bouquet an rt box of chocolates to Miss Holmes and a box of chocolates to each of the dancers. Mrs. Raymond received a dainty bouquet of carnations from Gwea Turner on behalf of the committee. The prize-winners were: Floral display, girls, 5 to 9 years: vnian Patterson; 9 to 12 years.
