NEW LIGHTHOUSE TENDER
CONTRACT SIGNED DUE N.Z. NEXT YEAR A contract for the construction of the new lighthouse steamer to replace the Tutanekai has been placed with Messrs. H. and W. Hawthorn Leslie and Co.. Ltd.. Hebburn-on-Tyne. The new ship will be 210 feet in length, between perpendiculars, 25 feet moulded breadth, and 15 feet 6 inches moulded depth. The ship will have a cruiser stern, and will be propelled by tripieexpansion engines to give her a service speed of 11 knots. The boilers will be fitted to burn either coal or oil. A full equipment of lifeboats will be provided as well as motor-launches for working lighthouse landings and teaches. The ship will also be fitted with gear for repairing cables and for lifting and laying buoys and moorings. Special attention will be given to the living accommodation for the crew. There will also be special accommodation for lightkeepers and their families travelling on transfer, and a limited number of cabins for ether passengers. In addition to the most up-to-date navigating appliances, the ship will be fitted with a radio direction-finder ami the latest type of sonic depth-sounding apparatus. It is expected that the new ship, whose name has not yet been chosen, will arrive in New Zealand about the end of next year.
