FLOODS DAMAGE WEIR

BRIDGE PROTECTION WORK NEW PLYMOUTH HIGHWAY From Our Own Correspondent NEW PLYMOUTH, Today. Recent floods have done serious damage to the Waiwakaiho River weir at Fitzroy and Public Works Department engineers who have visited New Plymouth to confer with local engineers consider the reconstruction work will be costly. According to the borough engineer, Mr. C. Clarke, the weir is on the point of collapse. The trouble has been caused by shingle erosion, a large quantity of metal having been washed from above and below the weir, thus lowering the bed of the river. Although the weir is intended to protect the bridge it is unlikely that the bridge will be endangered before reconstruction is carried out in the summer. The bridge carries the main road traffic north from New Plymouth.
