Morrison, retiring headmistress of the Epsom Girls’ Grammar School, was made at the annual prize-giving ceremony held last evening in the assembly hall of the Auckland Boys’ Grammar School. In paying a tribute to the headmistress Professor A. P. W. Thomas, . chairman of the Board of Governors, who presided, said the school had attained great success under Miss Morl rison’s administration, extending over l 13 years. ■ When the school was first opened in . 1916 it had been said that the expected number of pupils would not be obtained. In the first year the roll had 174 names, and for the year just closl ing it was 607. , But the success of the school had not been marked so much by growth of numbers as in public esteem. Under _ Miss Morrison’s administration it had mad© rapid progress, both scholasti- ’ cally and in other respects, and it had ! attained to an honourable position among the secondary schools of the Dominion. SUCCESSFUL YEAR In- her report, Miss Morrison said the school had again been very successful in the public examinations. Of six girls who sat for university entrance scholarships four were successful and the other two passed with credit. Twenty-one girls qualified for higher leaving certificates and 37 passed matriculation. Public Service entrance papers were successfully taken by 14 girls and at the teachers 1 D certificate examinations last August every one of the school’s 28 candidates gained partial success; full passes were hardly possible for schoolgirls. The school secured seven senior national scholarships and 103 senior free places; but no junior national scholarships, as the lowered age cut out all but three of the intending candidates. Professor Thomas presented the prizes for class work and Mrs. A. Burns those for sports. At the close of the ceremony the girls gave unrestrained cheers for Miss Morrison, and amid scenes of enthusiasm the scholars sang “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Two other members of the teaching staff also said farewell to the school last evening, Miss B. Battersby, senior science mistress, who has been appointed to Nelson Girls’ College and Miss K. L. Latimer, who is leaving the profession. Yb—Prizes: D. S. Phipps, 1; W. Matthews, 2.
