INDOOR BOWLING

END-OF-SEASON FUNCTION PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES On Wednesday evening last the members of the Young Diamond Social Club tendered a complimentary social to the Orange Bowling Association to celebrate the close of the 1929 season. Excellent dance music was provided by the Snappy Six, and extras by Sister Miller, and judging by the crowded state of the Orange Hall the funds of the association should benefit considerably. During the evening the trophies were presented by the president, Bro. Frank Harris, to the following: Champion woman skip, Sister M. E. J. Miller. Silver cup, runners-up, tie: Sisters Young and Kingdom Miniature rose bowls, best performance of sister in Friendly Societies tournaments. Cutglass rose bowl: Sister F. C. Rout. Men’s champion pairs, silver cups: Bros J. Elliott (lead), J. McPherson (skip). Bro. Tony Jenkins, president of the Rechabite Indoor Bowling Association, presented the ladies’ shield and silver stars to the winning team, No. 51 Ponsonby, Mesdames Young, Rout and Boles and Bro. F. A. Harris. Bro. Geo. Jarrett, vice-president of the Auckland Friendly Societies’ Indoor Bowling Association, then presented the men’s shield and silver stars to the winning team, No. 10, Young Diamond (Bros. A. Strange, F. Simpson, J. Elliott and F. A. Harris). A GREAT WORKER Bro. H. Kayes, on behalf of the Orange Bowling Association, then made a presentation to Bro. Harris as an appreciation of the great work he had done, not only for the Orange Bowling Association and the Friendly Societies’ Association, but also for indoor bowling throughout the country. Bro. Harris, in replying, thanked two very excellent teams for his double success. In the case of the women’s team, it left very little for him to do, and as for the rest, he had had such wonderful support from his own association, from every member of the Friendly Societies’ Association and other friends, and such sympathetic treatment from the Press (which early realised the possibilities of the game), that it was really the members’ own loyalty and enthusiasm that had put indoor bowling so definitely on the map. He had enjoyed every moment of the past two years, strenuous though they had been. The chairman of the Young Diamond Social Club, Mr. A. C. Paul, then made a presentation to Mrs. Miller, who during the season has always provided the extras. WAITEMATA ASSOCIATION The Waitemata Indoor Bowling Association held a highly successful tournament in the Hobsonville Public Hall on Thursday evening, when eight teams met to decide which should hold for the first time a fine shield presented by Bro. T. Clark, of Tlobsonville. Avondale beat Hobsonville S-5 in the final.
