CANTONESE VICTORY

IRONSIDES REPULSED WITH HEAVY LOSS CORPSES CHOKE RIVER HONG-KONG. Friday. The Cantonese are following up the retreating Ironsides, and are inflicting a further reverse. In the two days’ battle with the Kwangsi forces Canton and Nanking gunboats co-operated by landing marines, who turned machine-guns on the enemy, while they were attempting to cross the North River, which is choked full of corpses. Canton is celebrating the victorious drive. The success is stated to be due to the German military experts, who were specially sent from Nanking by the Fresident, Marshal Cbiang Kai-shek, and they are organising the defences. Part of the German system consists in mining sectors and thereby killing hundreds of the Ironsides. Streams of wounded continue to arrive at Canton.
