EROSION OF RIVER
WAIOEKA BRIDGE AFFECTED PROTECTIVE WORK TO BE DONE From Our Ou» Correspondent OPOTOKI. Today Great concern has latel\ been felt :n : Opotoki over the manner in which the i Waioeka River is cutting into the I eastern bank a short distance above the new Waioeka Bridge, which gives . connection to the town on the main | highway, and it is felt that unless I something is done soon, there will be i a danger of the river cutting off one [ end of the bridge. j The scouring of the bank on the eastern side has also had the eff.'et of throwing the river across the other side below the bridge. Here the river has cut a new channel, and now runs in the old channel alongside the main road to Whakatane, and slowly cutting the roadway away. Yesterday, representatives of the borough council, held a conference j and discussed the position. A visit J of inspection was made to the scene j of the trouble, and afterward it was j unanimously decided to take joint ! action in providing protection works. ! it was decided to build a big groin on the eastern side of the river. This will have the effect of stopping the waters taking such a big sweep across to the western bank. It is also proposed to scoop a now channel running under the middle of the bridge with the hope that the river will cut a permanent way there, and divert the waters from the main highway.
