TE AROHA ANNUAL FIXTURE

LIBERAL STAKES WILL DRAW BIG FIELDS TROTTERS SET TIGHT MARK A luvge number of horses at present in work at Epsom and Otahuhu are being prepared for the Te Aroha Trotting Club’s annual fixture, which eventuates on Saturday, January 2d. This is one of the most popular meetings on the Auckland provincial circuit, and local owners patronise the fixture liberally. Th© programme is based on sound lines and attractive prize money is allotted, and with the handicapping in th© capable hands of Mr. C. E. Goosman, the nominations, which close on Wednesday, January S, are sure to be on the large side. Th© only event on the card which many trainers consider has a rather drastic limit is the Elstow Handicap, a square-gaiters’ heat. This is run over a. mil© and a-half, and has a limit of 0.45, which is a good deal tighter than similar events on the other country schedules. There are a fair number of “maiden” trotters now in commission, but their owners are not prepared to throw away something like live seconds to give their candidates a race. Had the limit been about 3.50 there would probably be several more novices seen in action at Te Aroha, but the club has no doubt endeavoured to bring the mile and a-half heat within the province of trotters that will be taking part in the two-mile square-gaiters’ handicap, with its 4.54 limit.
