MARTON MEETING
ENTRIES CLOSE TONIGHT The summer meeting of the Marton Jockey Club is to be held at Marton on January 1 and 2. Nominations for all events close with the secretary, Mr. Arthur Way, this evening. The principal event is the Marton Cup, of £6OO, one and a-quarter miles, to be run on the opening day. Praetor lias improved in appearance since racing last season, and as he galloped well at Ellerslie yesterday he is sure of a good following in the Waipa Plate. Early speed will count among the large number engaged, and J. Williamson’s candidate should not be lacking. Daylight, who is engaged in the Kiliikihi Handicap, has not had a race for quite a time, and he may lack on the score of racing condition. The same applies to Romford, who is also in this event. He is a brilliant galloper when in form. Thursby was consistency itself at Wliangarei recently and subsequently he went two fine races at Takapuna without securing any of the prizes. Ho has done satisfactorily in the interim and R. E. Brown intends to have him on hand for the Te Awamutu Cup at the Waipa meeting tomorrow. The Thurnham gelding does not appeal, but in the event of a heavy track, and it seems unlikely at present, his stock will soar accordingly. However, it appears as if the Ellerslie trainer missed an undeniable chance at Taumarunui, where there was enough rain about to float a boat.
