The cricket match for tho Hawke Cup between Manawatu, the holders, and Hawke’s Bay, the challengers, began yesterday morning in fine weather. Hawke's Bay won the toss and batted first, and compiled 160. Manawatu had made 90 for two wickets when stumps were drawn for the day. Play was resumed this morning, with Gallichan and Norris batting. After half an hour’s play the score had reached 110 for two. Callahan and Norris continued to add runs till 12.45 p.m., when Gallichan was caught behind tho wickets. Almost immediately Norris went l.b.w. to Lowry, who had forsaken wicketkeeping for bowling. Cutler did not last long. The total was then 194 for five wickets.
